Jonaki Bhattacharyya

Board Member

Jonaki Bhattacharyya is an ethnoecologist who does applied research and conservation, specializing in wildlife and habitat stewardship. Working for Indigenous-led  initiatives, Jonaki provides technical support, research, writing, and facilitation services to Indigenous nations, NGOs, and their partners. She draws on her interdisciplinary background and diverse cultural experiences to support land- and community-based work, including cultural burning (fire stewardship), stewardship and land use planning, and wildlife management.


Jonaki earned a PhD in from the University of Waterloo Faculty of Environment. Since 2012, she has worked with Tsilhqot'in to establish Dasiqox Nexwagwez?an (Tsilhqot’in Protected Area). Drawing on over 20 years of experience, she provides technical, field, and research services to support communities and First Nations throughout Canada. Jonaki is actively involved in graduate student advising, is a recipient of the 2015 Wilburforce Fellowship in Conservation Science, and currently serves as a Board member with the Mother Tree Network Society.
