Summary
In July 2020, the federal government released draft terms of reference for a strategic assessment of thermal coal mining. Done right, a strategic assessment could help halt the mining and export of this carbon-intensive product. However, as we pointed out in our submissions on the draft terms of reference, the terms of reference fall far short of the mark.
In this letter, West Coast – along with Ecojustice and Environmental Defence – call on Environment and Climate Change Minister Jonathan Wilkinson to build a rigorous, inclusive and participatory strategic assessment that looks at both the mining and the export of thermal coal.
