There are many different legal authorities and regulations that have a role in the management of coastal floodplains in BC. West Coast Environmental Law has prepared this infographic to help explain the very complicated regulatory environment, and to guide community discussions about planning and implementing green infrastructure in these areas.
The infographic demonstrates the need for a more integrated approach to floodplain management, involving all levels of government – federal, provincial, Indigenous and municipal. The need for integration is even more critical as communities increasingly grapple with challenges associated with climate change, such as sea level rise and increased flooding.
